From an early age, I’ve always been drawn to helping others in one way or another, this led to me working and volunteering for several charities.
During this time, I overcame some significant personal challenges and traumatic events, and this inspired me to completely retrain and become a Counsellor.
I enrolled on my very first counselling course in 2014 and eventually went on to study two different Counselling degrees at both Teesside for my 1st degree and Sunderland University where I qualified with a First Class Honours degree.
I've worked in Private Practice since 2017 and still love it as much as I did when I started! My first therapy business - 'Therapy With Kay', was initially based from my office in Redcar, Teesside. Now I see people all over the UK for Counselling via zoom.
In 2020 I went on to train as a Clinical Supervisor.
I provide clinical and creative Supervision for other counsellors from all over the UK and I'm also a professional mentor for trainees, alongside running workshops specialising in creative self-care and professional development.
First and foremost, you will never be a number in a huge faceless database for me - I have thankfully left the 'conveyor belt/revolving door therapy' of big, uncaring, greedy organisations far behind me!
You are an individual and deserve to get the best from your therapy.
I will spend time genuinely listening to you in sessions.
I will spend time thinking about you before we meet again - by reflecting on the session, researching, finding resources, planning our sessions and seeking out any relevant training or advice that may help me to help you feel better sooner.
I understand what it's like to be in therapy, I have personally been to therapy a few times in my life and each experience has been very different, very difficult but very valuable in it's own way.
It's made me more aware of just how scary therapy can be, how much work and effort it can be and also how much better you can feel if the right relationship exists between you and your therapist.
I guess you can say I genuinely give a damn!
I work in a Pluralistic way which simply means that I have trained in different Counselling styles so that each therapy session can be uniquely tailored specifically to my client’s individual needs.
My counselling training includes various talking therapies such as person-centered, CBT, transactional analysis and solution focussed therapy as well as creative therapies and using art for emotional expression.
I'm a trained trauma-informed counsellor with Pre-Trial Therapy experience enabling me to best support survivors of sexual violence, victims of violent crime and those who have been involved or witnessed significant traumatic incidents or events.
As an Accredited Registrant member of the NCPS I regularly update my skills through courses and workshops. I attend at least 30 extra hours of training every year to keep on top of the latest therapeutic interventions.
I have been working as a self-employed Counsellor since 2017.
In Spring 2022 I won the 'Inspiring Women: Women in Business Award'
With literally thousands of hours of face-to-face and online Counselling experience supporting individual clients with a wide variety of mental health issues, I have amassed a wealth of resources and experience to support you.
I have previously worked in the NHS, within GP surgeries, various counselling agencies and several charities across the UK whilst also running two successful businesses of my own.
I still provide ongoing support as an affiliate counsellor to MIND Teesside and other very valuable and big-hearted organisations that help individuals get access to counselling when they need it most.
